Unit 9 Final Project

I Introduction:

Why is it important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically? What areas do you need to develop to achieve the goals you have for yourself?
I can not help someone change if I have not been there myself. There is no credibility in someone who does not practice what they preach. Truly immersing oneself into their profession makes a better experience for the two involved. The Dacher text states that there should be a relationship between the two. There should be a student teacher relationship and most people would say that a teacher who is passionate about a subject makes a better teacher. I need to develop spiritually which through our teachings has brought this deficiency to light.

II Assessment:
How have you assessed your health in each domain? How do you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?
Health is not just the absence of illness. It can be viewed as a holistic view of positive well being. I assessed each domain differently and incorporated the 10 point scale for where I stood on each aspect. Spiritually I used my ability to connect my faith to my life and my mind. I was raised in a strict Christian household but has since fallen away from this upbringing. I have learned that my spiritual and psychological well being are linked. I have noticed that now that I focus more on spirituality my psychological aspect has improved. Overall, I rate my spirituality a 4. Psychologically I rate myself as a 8. I tend to do well in this aspect. I have been blessed with a even-keeled personality and am rarely affected by constant stress. Physically, I would rate myself as a 9. I workout 5 to 6 times a week and have done this for years.

III Goal development:
List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual.
There is one obvious area that I need to improve in. I feel that this area will help me improve in the other two areas. Spiritually, is my biggest need for improvement. My goal for this area is to re-connect with my faith from the past. This is not the end for my goals in this area. I also plan on connecting my mind and my body. Psychologically and physically I would like to maintain the levels that I currently possess. The key that I was missing was that spirituality was tied into every aspect of my life. Clearing my mind and focusing on it’s importance can clear my mind of the hindrances to the other two aspects.

IV Practices for personal health:

What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains; Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual. Provide at least two examples of exercises or practices in each domain. Explain how you will implement each example.
I am fairly well balanced in the areas of Physical and Psychological fitness. I plan on maintaining my Physical fitness by maintaining my current routine and by controlling outside factors as much as I can. There are times when life and work gets in the way of my exercise commitments but I tend to try my hardest to squeeze in my workout times. This is the easiest aspect of the three for me, as I have always been an athlete and love physical activities.
My plan to improve my Psychological aspect is to improve my Spiritual aspect. These two domains in my opinion are almost one and the same. Dacher, gives us two exercises to improve our Spiritual health. I plan on using the Subtle mind and Meditation techniques to foster this aspect. The Subtle mind give us techniques to control our thoughts through mental training. My mind tends to wander so this is very helpful for me. Meditation also helps me to clear my mind. I will and have taken out 30 minutes daily to sit alone in a quiet place and just clear my mind. I did not set a certain time a day. I wanted to make sure that no matter what was going on day or night I could squeeze in these practices.

V Commitment:
How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long-term practices for health and wellness?
I plan on measuring my success by creating a written schedule of my mental “time-outs”. I liken this to a work-out plan given to my clients. It helps to see something that it is written down on paper. In addition to the Subtle mind and Meditation techniques I would like to incorporate more daily bible readings. I feel that this is another way to incorporate spirituality in my daily life. Another, big aspect is to not set unrealistic expectations of myself. If I miss a day or I fall short of my goals it is not the end of the world and I can begin again. The Dacher text will also be left within my grasp when I practice his two techniques. It was his exercises that helped me see that I needed to improve in these areas.

  1. Hi Monroe,

I think presented an excellent plan for your personal growth for the future. I think awareness and identifying one’s weakness as you did can be essential in moving forward in personal growth. Practicing subtle mind techniques and meditation will certainly help you to foster your spiritual growth which will undoubtedly have a positive effect on your psychological and physical development as well. I think that your methods of documenting your “mental timeouts will be effective in assessing your progress. I wish you the best of luck on your continued journey of personal growth.

  2. Monroe,

I completely agree with you when you discuss the importance of teachers being passionate about what they teach. I also feel that it is very important for teachers to learn the integral approach so when they educate students it is with positive and open-minded approach.
I too have taken a step back from my christian upbringing, for many reasons, but I have been able to enhance my spirituality through meditation practices. Dacher's Subtle Mind meditation has helped me be able to clear my head when I need to recharge.
It is very helpful for me to reach my goals on a daily basis if I have a written schedule or to-do list. I also feel gratification when I can cross things off that list, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I can complete all the goals I set for myself each day.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas for enhancing the aspects of your life.

    Peace,
    Nico
